This belt was made using a jersey knit pillowcase. One that I wasn't using anymore.
However, If you don't have one of these handy, you'll need a 1/3 of a yard of jersey knit fabric.
*Note - My belt was just barely long enough. If you think you want a longer one, I would suggest purchasing fabric or even using a knit sheet so that you have more fabric to work with.
Inspiration struck when I saw this dress on Modcloth. I have almost the exact same grey striped dress that came with a cheap leather belt that broke the first time I wore it. I saw how plain my dress was without this darling bow and I knew I had to whip one up.
Here's what I started with.
Cut the seams of the hem.
Press out wrinkles.
If you're using a pillowcase like me then you'll want to cut one 5.5" strip down the length of the case and one 6" strip.
If you you're using a purchased fabric you should cut a strip to 35" x 5.5" and another to 35" x 6"
Cut the ends to a straight edge if needed.
Pin together the long side of the two strips of fabric.
Sew together.
Open up the two pieces of fabric so that the seem you just sewed in in the middle.
Lay right sides of fabric together and pin. Sew together. (if you cut your fabric into the long 35" strips then you can skip these steps).
Lay right sides of fabric together and pin in place.
Sew down both short sides and the remaining long side. Leave a 5-6" opening so that you can turn the belt right side out.
You may want to sew the short sides to an angle like I did here.
Once you've turned the belt right side out, you can top stitch around the entire perimeter.
Stitch right over the opening as well.
That's it. You have yourself a nifty bow belt.
Tie it around the waist of a cute summer dress and be on your way.
